The Chamber Music Week

2016/06/08 21:30 21:30 - 2016/06/10 21:30 21:30

The Chamber Music Week, organized with the support of the Regional Direction for Culture, features a variety of performing groups and programmes. The first concert, “Celebrating Musical Anniversaries” marks birth and death dates of several important composers: W. S. Bennett (*200), E. Satie (*150), M. Reger (†100), E. Granados (†100) e G. Cassadó (†50).

The second concert is a clarinet and piano recital, interpreted by two Italian international concert artists, who perform some of the best known pieces from the clarinet repertoire, including the Copland Concerto, with the particular attraction of improvisations on popular Jewish songs.

The following concert brings a Saxophone Quartet with a dynamic and entertaining programme, highlighting in particular the talent of the young Madeiran saxophonist Elvis Sousa who is pursuing his career in France and who will be performing the 1st movement of the famous Khachaturian Violin Concerto in a version for soprano saxophone.

The next night brings the performance of one of the most famous and demanding piano trios, written by Tchaikovsky in memory of his mentor, N. Rubinstein, as well as a selection of his well-known “Seasons” in a trio version.

The final concert celebrates the Camões Day (the author of the most famous 16th-century Portuguese epic poem celebrating Portuguese discoveries; the day of his death is also celebrated as the Day of Portugal and Portuguese Communities) and, at the same time, it is an Author’s Night, dedicated to one of the most important Madeiran composers, author of Madeira’s official anthem, João Victor Costa. Eight of his Sonnets on texts by Camões, as well as several world premieres of his works for piano, two pianos, and clarinet will be performed.
